Raybearer - Jordan Ifueko ★★★★★

 

Raybearer is my favourite read of 2020! I read a lot of fantasy books but this might just be my favourite!

Tarisai, raised in isolation by her mysterious mother know as The Lady, longs for a sense of belonging. When The Lady sends Tarisai to the capital, she competes to join the Crown Prince's Council of Eleven through the Ray; it's a bond that runs deeper than blood, a family that Tarisai has always craved for. But The Lady has a magical wish for Tarisai: kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust.

Jordan Ifueko is such a talented author. Raybearer is a fresh and different fanatsy unlike many I have read before. Set in a mythical land, Ifueko paints such a vivid and rich world full of culture that really brings the story to life. My favourite part of the book is reading about the mythology and folklore of the different realms. The story itself is filled with adventure and magic where people are born with powers called Hallows and demon's exist in the underworld.

The characters are all wonderfully written. I like how the story follows Tarisai from when she was a child so we can really see her true personality. She is a strong protagonist - she's brave and determined. I also love the bond she shares with her Council Siblings - they are all loyal to each other and kind, especially Dayo, the Crown Prince, who is one of my favourites. It teaches us about loyalty and friendship and what it means to be part of a family.

Overall, Raybearer is a such a strong debut. I could not put the book down and am excited to see where it is heading next!
